Techouf Oumori

(2004) for Clarinet and String Quartet

The source of inspiration for this piece is a song by Egyptian singer Oum Kolthoum, entitled  Techouf Oumori. When I first heard the song I was fascinated with its melodic contour and modal use. In the piece, however, thismelody is used as a pure compositional idea: it is completely taken out of its modal-Arabic context, and put in a individual stylistic realm that I created for it. In this piece I use an eight-tone series, which derives from Oum Kolthoum's tune. Techouf Oumori was commissioned by the Fountain Ensemble.
